The Un-Layoff

Employers may have laid off workers, but that doesn't mean they've completely written them off. A new survey by OI Paterners/FS&F shows that 40 percent of employers plan to rehire at least some of their former employees, either giving them back their full-time jobs or making them consultants for freelancers.

OI Partners, a global career transition and coaching firm, surveyed 318 organizations. It found that 37 percent of employers don't plan to rehire those they've laid off, and 23 percent aren't sure if they will.

The survey found 52 percent of employers have at least occasionally rehired laid-off workers, and 16 percent have done so frequently. Nineteen percent never do.

Financial service and manufacturing companies were most likely to say they would re-hire employees, at 49 percent and 47 percent respectively, while only 24 percent of health care businesses and 21 percent of government and nonprofit groups said they would.
