In the competitive world of American business, human nature drives us to be the best at something, anything — at least to give us a right to brag.
News media such as ours know that all too well as businesses themselves and as purveyors of information. So, in our first Best of Business Awards, we sought to find out what our readers believe to be the best in Central Massachusetts at what they do across 51 categories: those that offer the best service, sweat all the details and have customer-focused employees who deliver outstanding products and services.
From mid-October to early December, we collected votes from nearly 1,700 respondents, each of whom had to select a company in at least 10 of the categories. We got what we had hoped for: a comprehensive list of winners that include both household names from the region's business community, as well as businesses that, for the most part, fly under the radar.
This issue of the Worcester Business Journal presents the winners, as well as some noteworthy runners-up who either came close in the voting for a particular category or had a strong presence in a field.
The winners will be honored at our first Best of Business Awards event, which will take place Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Coral Seafood in Worcester.

To the winners: Congratulations! And enjoy your bragging rights!
