Worcester bakery The Queen's Cups announced on its website it has closed due to efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus, while its re-open date is uncertain.
"I was thinking (about reopening) next Wednesday, but I'm honestly not sure," Owner Renee Diaz said. "I don't know if we will keep getting orders."
Diaz said she reduced her 25-employee staff down to herself and four employees.
As Gov. Charlie Baker has ordered all restaurants and bars to close their dining rooms, some have switched to pickup and delivery, while others have simply closed. Baker also banned all gatherings of 25+ people.
Diaz founded The Queen's Cups in 2012 in Millbury and moved the shop to Worcester in 2017, where it has generated more than $1 million in revenue annually. Diaz diaries the difficulties she has with the business in her monthly WBJ advice column The Struggle is Real. Her next column is due to appear in the March 30 issue of WBJ.
In her website announcement Monday, Diaz said she hoped to reopen the bakery within a week, although she told WBJ the estimate is uncertain. The business is working on special orders for the coming weekend now, but she doesn't know if that will continue.
"I'm so grateful for the orders that we have gotten and I hope to continue to be to accommodate all of them," Diaz said. "We are staying hopeful and grateful and cannot wait for things to resume. I miss seeing all of my staff and customers already."
