Lisi sits at the head of a foundation with a $133-million endowment, distributing about $7-$8 million every year to nonprofits to help with initiatives like community arts programs, health issues for disadvantaged populations, youth services, legal aid programs, and immigrant and refugee advocacy. The size of the endowment, built up over the foundation's first 40 years, gives Lisi access she leverages to benefit the wider community – bringing together people to appreciate hardships while building a strong community. Under her leadership for the past 26 years, the foundation's special projects include the Leadership Worcester training program, Youth for Community Improvement, the GLBT Partnership, and Early Childhood Initiative. Its latest round of giving in June was $69,000 to arts programs like Ansaar of Worcester for disabled and low-income Arabic-speaking and Somali-speaking refugees; Crocodile River Music for its African Music Series; and Worcester Earn A Bike to create a mural in the Main South neighborhood.
What advice would you give up-and-comers? Love your community, and it will love you back. Connect with others to make a difference. Be curious, listen, and share your knowledge. Make your voice heard and help to elevate the voices of others who are not being heard.
