The End Of An Era

News that Worcester Publishing sold Worcester Magazine to Holden Landmark Corp., the publisher of the Landmark, the Millbury-Sutton Chronicle, the Leominster Champion and four other publications, represents the passing of an era in the city’s media landscape.

We are sad to see Allen Fletcher’s ownership of the paper come to an end. A former owner of the Worcester Business Journal, he’s been a strong and valiant supporter of the local community through Worcester Magazine since buying the paper in 1992.

No doubt the recent economic development gains within the city’s Canal District would not have been so great without Fletcher and the paper’s active role.

New Publisher Gareth Charter has suggested the paper will remain true to its alternative roots. With significant editorial staff cuts announced last week, only time will tell if this new regime will further strengthen the paper. We wait optimistically to see how it will evolve.

Fletcher has been a dedicated advocate of the fourth estate, and he will be missed, as will the editorial staffers who helped keep this community informed. n
