The Telegram and Gazette, Worcester’s paper of record, will remain at 100 Front St. in a smaller office on the third floor in the high-rise building it has occupied since 2012. Its name, emblazoned atop the building, will be removed.
Telegram & Gazette Editor Michael McDermott wrote an announcement published in the T&G on Sunday saying after looking at other options, the company signed a three-year lease for office space at the Mercantile Center. Its previous lease in the building was 11 years.
McDermott wrote the Telegram & Gazette sign would be removed from the 20-story building, so the company can focus its financial resources on news operations, rather than branding.
The Telegram had been headquartered on the fifth floor but the rise of hybrid work and downsizing by parent company Gannett left much of that office unused.
The newspaper’s parent company, Virginia-based Gannett, has been steadily reducing the amount of staff. For example, the Telegram newsroom has 22 employees, according to its website. That’s down from the 162 employees who moved into two floors of the office building back in July 2012, a figure that included both newsroom and non-newsroom employees.
Mercantile Center owner, Franklin Realty Advisors of Wellesley, announced in May that Worcester law firm Fletcher Tilton would lease the fifth floor of the building after the Telegram’s 11-year lease ended.
