We do more than sports
Whether you’re 2 or 102, Teamworks offers family recreation and entertainment, says Vice President of Business Development Bob Rojee. Located on the Northborough/Westborough line, the indoor sports facility boasts 70,000 square feet of playing fields, gyms, video arcades, a sports lounge, kitchen and party room.
The business of fun can also be profitable to sponsor companies. "We get one million visits each year," says Rojee. That’s a lot of potential customers that companies could be in front of, he notes. And there are a myriad of ways they could share their message, including cross-promotions, league sponsorship with logos on t-shirts, field dasherboards and team schedule web pages, a lobby table with brochures, company-branded vehicle by the door, or inclusion in a Teamworks local mailing.
Most Teamworks visitors live or work within a 15-20 minute drive to the facility. And they come more than once. "We’re a destination location," says Scott Gaetz, co-owner (and roller hockey player).
"We live in such a high-paced society," adds Rojee, "and need an outlet for recreation, whether it’s through work or with our family." Adult sports leagues book the playing fields every night of the week, with numbers growing in the over-40 and over-50 leagues. While soccer and basketball draw large numbers, there are also teams for wiffleball, dodgeball (youth, high school and beach versions), kickball and beach volleyball.
"It’s more of a social than athletic opportunity for many participants. You probably know someone who plays here," laughs co-owner (and amateur soccer goalie) Tom McLaughlin.
Outside, there’s a climbing wall and beach volleyball court, both popular activities during Teamworks’ school vacation camps, when up to 100 children play in nearly every space available.
But it’s not all fun and games. Every year, Teamworks puts on some 100 corporate events. Typically consisting of teambuilding or field training programs, the events take employees out of their everyday routines and challenge them in new and different ways.
"Experiential education helps break down barriers and lets a group process content previously learned in a more traditional setting," Rojee explains. One group of salespeople spent a morning applying the concept of "kaizen," Japanese for incremental improvement. Their program had half the group pretending to be customers, the other half sales people bidding for business. Hidden "spies" lurked in their teams, looking for camaraderie, cooperation and passion for the product.
Teamworks facilitators ask open-ended questions to get participants thinking about how the exercises tie back to work. Groups from EMC, Fidelity, Staples and Philip Morris, among others, have spent a day with the Teamworks team.
"It’s a morale booster to go off-site for these events. We often hear what an effective day it was," adds Rojee.
The Northborough facility is one of four recreation centers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island operating under the Teamworks banner, with a fifth expected to be operating soon in the Worcester area. Plans for a corporate fitness satellite also are in the works, partnering with a Marlborough hotel.
"Our business continues to evolve as more families and companies focus on the importance of a healthy lifestyle," concludes Rojee.
