Since January when he took over Reliant, the largest independent medical group in Central Massachusetts, Elsawy has implemented position control, managed total medical expenses and focused more on accountability to be on track to deliver an operating surplus of $15.5 million for this year, an improvement from last year, when Reliant laid off 3 percent of its workforce.
Elsawy is moving Reliant towards accountable care. Model cells, where providers work together in a collaborative office environment to foster team-based health care, are the basis for all future Reliant offices, as Elsawy battles an industry shortage of primary care physicians.
