Talk Back from the Aug. 29, 2011 issue

Green Tech's Future
Marlborough-based Evergreen Solar announced Aug. 15 that it was seeking voluntary bankruptcy protection, marking the beginning of the end for the storied company. Evergreen Solar received a lot of press attention and state tax incentive support, but fell prey to an increasingly competitive global market as well as pressures on its business model. We asked our LinkedIn Discussion Group readers whether Evergreen Solar’s fate was a bad sign for all green technology firms and heard back that the local firm is more the exception than the rule:

"Evergreen got caught in several wind shears, some unique to the company itself and not reflective of any trend."

"Personally, I do not feel that this is an indication that the clean energy sector is in danger in our region or any other. I also do not feel that this sector is a risky bet."

Immigration Debate
We ran an op-ed by local attorney Kirk Carter about his views on the importance of immigration to fuel the American economy. Not surprisingly, the piece sparked a number of comments from online readers who took issue with Carter’s support of immigration, and more specifically the federal government’s H-1B visa program, which allows companies to hire foreign workers for specific jobs.

We are talking about illegal aliens. He (Carter) is talking about nonsense and immigrants, and not very well to boot.

"…[T]he vast majority of H-1Bs are hired into very low-level positions…This belies the industry lobbyists' claims that H-1Bs are hired because they are experts that can't be found among the U.S. workforce."
