Tale Of Two Regional Retailers

Framingham-based discount retailer the TJX Cos. Inc. said increased customer traffic led to a 4 percent increase in June sales.

The company said it took in $1.84 billion in the five weeks ended July 4 compared to $1.77 billion during the same month last year. For the 22 weeks ended July 4, the company said sales reached $7.68 billion, an increase of 2 percent over the year before.

Same-store sales increased 4 percent over last year, as well. TJX operates T.J. Maxx, Marshals, HomeGoods and several other discount retail chains.

The June earnings story was not the same for BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. The Natick-based company said June sales decreased by 4.8 percent to $1 billion from $1.05 billion in June 2008.

Same-store sales declined by 7.5 percent on a 10.2 percent drop in gasoline revenue compared to a year ago. The company also said the unseasonably cool and wet weather accounted for as much as a 2 percent decline in sales in the northeast.
