Taking charge and making changes

Our 2007 Business Leaders of the Year have a common thread: Through their persistence and ability to develop teamwork, they have transformed their organizations into significant economic forces in their regions.

The Worcester Business Journal chooses its business leaders based on consistent achievement, their response to challenges, and community activity. Along with our partner, the Clark University Graduate School of Management, we present our Corporate Citizen Award, given to a company that demonstrates all of the above qualities and more.

• Large business: Frederick Eppinger has led The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. from crisis back to health, and established a strong sense of community-mindedness at the company. His story starts on page 12.

• Entrepreneur: Ann Gray’s untraditional exit from academia to a tough, competitive industry has resulted in the creation of jobs and wealth. Her story starts on page 14.

• Non-Profit: Francis "Frank" Saba brought a struggling community hospital back to life with a low-key persistence. His story starts on page 16.

• Corporate Citizen: Woodmeister Master Builders has created a company managed and guided by employees, that brings the pride and care it takes in building luxurious homes into building strong bridges with its community. Woodmeister’s story starts on page 18. We will honor our Business Leaders and Corporate Citizen at a Feb. 21 reception at the Beechwood Hotel in Worcester, starting at 4:30 p.m. For reservations, please call 508-755-8004 x 238.
