The cost of nursing home care in Massachusetts outside of Boston has increased 16 percent since 2004 compared to 17 percent nationwide, according to the results of the Genworth Financial Cost of Care Survey.
In Boston, the cost of nursing home care has increased 10 percent over the last five years. A year in a private nursing home costs $109,396 in Boston and $106,321 in the rest of the state, the survey found.
The national average for a year in a private nursing home is $76,460. Genworth pointed out that the average annual household income in the United States is $48,201. Genworth said the rising cost of nursing home care is a result of staff shortages.
The survey found that assisted living facilities in Massachusetts cost $46,440 per year and home care services cost $51,274 per year for 44 hours of care each week. Daily adult day health care costs $14,009 per year in Massachusetts outside Boston, the survey found.
