Sutton-based Mayfield Plastics has been sold to a Holyoke company, Universal Plastics.
The sale of the heavy gauge thermoforming and vacuum forming company to Universal closed Oct. 31, said Terry Minnick, president of Molding Business Services (MBS), which advised Mayfield in the sale. Universal will maintain operations out of both a 95,000-square-foot space in Holyoke and Mayfield’s 60,000-square-foot facility in Sutton, according to MBS.
Universal owner Jay Kumar said he plans to retain the existing staff at Mayfield and have it managed separately from Universal.
"We're committed to investing and growing the Mayfield facility," Kumar said.
Minnick said there was nobody within the family of former president Ron Cross to take over the company. Mr. Cross, who led the company since 2002 and moved it to Sutton three years later, passed away last week. The third-generation family business, which employed 45 as of this past summer, was founded in 1972.
Prior to the sale, Universal employed some 80 people in Holyoke and had gross annual sales of roughly $10 million, according to Universal’s website and press reports. Like Mayfield, Universal also does small-batch, precise thermoforming work.
