Package Steel Systems, Inc. in Sutton has been fined $7,360 by The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for violating its air pollution control and groundwater discharge permits at its steel building manufacturing facility.
MassDEP announced the penalty on Tuesday over Package Steel illegally discharging industrial wastewater into an onsite septic system and exceeding air pollution limits.
“Compliance with the air pollution control and wastewater regulations is absolutely necessary for companies to protect public health and the environment,” Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, said in a press release. “Package Steel Systems, Inc. has now addressed its wastewater violation, has committed to complying with air pollution requirements, and will pay a penalty for the noncompliance.”
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Package Steel Systems will pay the penalty and will comply with all applicable air emission limits. It has stopped its illegal wastewater discharge.
When reached for comment, the person who answered the phone at Package Steel declined to elaborate further on the fine, other than to say it was for “something stupid that they nailed us on.” The company official said the manufacturer does not want to relive the incident and is moving forward.
Located at 15 Harback Road in Sutton, Package Steel Systems was founded by Leo Moroney in 1950. According to the company’s website, it moved to Sutton from Shrewsbury in 1973, and in 2014 it was sold to Robert Fisette, who renamed it Package Steel Systems, Inc. It manufactures custom metal parts like frames, beams, and siding for buildings.
