Survey: Cost Is Biggest Health Care Issue In Mass.

The 2013 Health Care Public Opinion Survey conducted in May by the Massachusetts Medical Society found that Bay State adults consider cost the most pressing health care issue they’re facing, ahead of access and quality of care.

The survey has been conducted periodically over the last decade. This year’s results were collected from 417 telephone interviews conducted from May 14 to 16. Eight of 10 respondents, who were selected at random, identified cost as the most pressing health care issue.

Despite cost containment efforts at the state level, 65 percent of respondents said health care cost them more money in the last 12 months than in the previous year, with 28 percent saying it was “much more expensive.” Just 3 percent said health care had become less expensive.

And while most respondents — 84 percent — said they were satisfied with the quality of care they received in the last 12 months, the majority of those who were dissatisfied, or 50 percent, said it was because health care was too expensive.

Health care satisfaction appears to have a direct correlation to education and income levels. Seventy-six percent of respondents with a high school education said they were satisfied, compared to 86 percent of respondents with at least some college education. And 90 percent of those with incomes of more than $100,000 said they were at least somewhat satisfied with their health care, while 76 percent of those with incomes under $50,000 reported the same.
