Sunday marks new high with 23 Worcester County coronavirus deaths

Worcester County set a new high mark Sunday with 23 newly announced coronavirus deaths, surpassing the 200-death mark in about one month.

Those 23 new deaths, reported by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, exceed the previous high mark of 17, which the county reached three times, most recently on Saturday. Almost half the Worcester County deaths so far, 93, have been announced in the past week.

That grim mark was joined by another 112 new total coronavirus cases in Worcester County, a 3% jump in one day to 4,572. Statewide, cases also jumped 3%, or 1,590, to hit 54,938. In the city of Worcester, cases also rose 3%, or 54, to reach 1,751.

Deaths across Massachusetts rose by 169 to reach 2,899.

The Department of Public Health also reported 9,255 more coronavirus tests conducted, reaching 236,100.

In Worcester, the field hospital at the DCU Center now has 49 coronavirus patients. Reliant Medical Group said Monday it has 10 physicians and advanced practitioners working shifts at the facility.

UMass Memorial Medical Center has 170 confirmed or suspected coronavirus patients, including 75 in intensive care, according to the state. Saint Vincent Hospital has 60 and 12, respectively.

Elsewhere in Central Massachusetts, MetroWest Medical Center's Framingham and Natick campuses have 46 confirmed or suspected coronavirus patients, 17 of which are in an ICU. HealthAlliance in Leominster's numbers are 18 and three, respectively.

Nationwide, cases stood at 965,000 Monday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, with nearly 55,000 deaths. Cases internationally were nearing 3 million, with 207,000 deaths.
