In a special town meeting on Thursday, residents of Sturbridge voted 449-325 to deny zoning bylaws for a $25-million equine center that would include sports betting.
The vote was to amend a zoning bylaw to insert an agricultural entertainment overlay district in the 300-acre area where the Sturbridge Agricultural & Equestrian Center was planned.Â
Rezoning was necessary to move the project forward, and it will now be stalled indefinitely, according to Sturbridge Town Administrator Jeff Bridges.
The project would have required sports betting to be legalized, a prospect at which the Massachusetts Senate has hesitated.
