A study announced Monday will examine the barriers to growth facing small and medium-sized manufacturers in the Montachusett region of north central Massachusetts.
“With 87 percent of the Montachusett region’s manufacturers employing less than 20 people, there is a real need to support and develop manufacturers that can successfully navigate a global economy,” said Marty Jones, CEO of MassDevelopment, in a statement.
The study is a collaboration between MassDevelopment, the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) and RTI, a non-profit research institute.
Some 19.4 percent of North Central Massachusetts residents are employed in manufacturing, nearly twice the state average, said Jack Healy, MassMEP’s director of operations.
The project will be funded by a U.S. Department of Agricultural Rural Opportunities Grant.
