Federal budget cuts and payment changes made by Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) mean Massachusetts nursing homes face a $130 million reduction in Medicare funding in 2013 and 2014, according to health policy advisory firm Avalere Health.
The findings were included in a nationwide analysis conducted by the Washington, D.C.-based Avalere. Nursing homes across the U.S. face a total of $4 billion in Medicare cuts in 2013 and 2014, according to Avalere, and reductions over 10 years will total $65 billion.
The analysis, funded by the Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care, will be used to inform Massachusetts policy makers about how cuts will impact senior care, according to a statement by the alliance.
Alan G. Rosenbloom, president of the alliance, said cuts will likely impact staffing and the quality of care, and urged candidates for federal office to stop them.
"This makes no sense, and is wrong for seniors, providers, taxpayers and the future of our entire U.S. healthcare system," Rosenbloom said.
