Stryker To Pay $1.35M In Deceptive Marketing Settlement

Hopkinton-based medical device firm Stryker Biotech has agreed to pay $1.35 million to settle allegations that it marketed orthopedic products for uses for which they had not been approved, according to state Attorney General Martha Coakley‘s office.

It was alleged that Stryker misled health care providers about the appropriate uses of its products to boost sales of devices used in orthopedic procedures intended to strengthen and promote the growth of bones.

The Stryker products in question have not been reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in such situations.

Stryker will pay $325,000 in civil penalties, $875,000 to fund efforts to fight unlawful marketing of health care products and $150,000 in legal fees.

The settlement is the result of a multi-year investigation, Coakley’s office said.
