Sales spiked in May for two retail giants based in MetroWest.
BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. said a 4 percent increase in customer traffic and strong sales of gasoline, air conditioners, food and small appliances accounted for its 11.3 percent sales increase.
The Natick-based company brought in $871.9 million during the month compared to $783.4 million in May 2009.
The TJX Cos. Inc. of Framingham said May sales totaled $1.6 billion, an 8 percent increase over the prior year.
For the 17 weeks ending May 29, the company’s sales were $6.6 billion, a 13 percent increase over the same period a year earlier.
TJX operates T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and other discount retailers.
