Two Central Massachusetts retail giants, TJX Cos. Inc. and BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc., reported double-digit January sales increases.
Framingham-based TJX said sales hit $1.3 billion for the month, a 20 percent increase over the same month a year ago.
January same-store sales were up 12 percent over the prior year and the $20.3 billion in sales for all of 2009 exceeded 2008 by 8 percent.
TJX operates T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and other discount retailers.
BJ’s, which is based in Natick, said January sales were $743 million, a 13 percent increase over the prior year. Same store sales for the month were up 8.4 percent. The company said fourth quarter sales increased by 9.4 percent to $2.74 billion.
