Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, headquartered in Quincy, announced on Thursday that customers in the state using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits can now pay with an Electronic Benefits Transfer card when placing online orders.
The program is part of a state-wide initiative created by the Department of Transitional Assistance called the SNAP Online Purchasing Program, according to a press release from Stop & Shop.
Amazon, Walmart, Hannaford, ALDI, and Price Chopper are also participants, allowing SNAP beneficiaries to pay with EBT when shopping online through Instacart, according to the DTA’s website.
Retailers interested in joining the online purchasing program must be approved through the United States Department of Agriculture.
SNAP benefits and the EBT card can only be used to purchase SNAP-eligible foods, and do not cover the cost of delivery, said the press release.
"Offering EBT payment online is an integral part of Stop & Shop’s commitment to serving our communities,” said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop, in a statement. “We’re proud to make accessibility to healthy food easier and more convenient, especially for those impacted by the pandemic.”
