Stock tables gone astray

Stock market tables are taking a tumble in the news pages. While the tables still make an appearance in about two-thirds of the nation's daily newspapers, the listings are incomplete and force readers to check stock quotes online, according to a study by Arizona State University. In a content analysis of more than 100 daily newspapers and nearly 30 business editors, one-third of small-circulation daily papers print no stocks tables, but daily papers with a circulation of 100,000 or more do print some form of listings. The study also found that about 75 percent of U.S. newspapers provide one page or less of business news, including the stock tables. At larger papers, six or fewer pages make up the business section, most of which include a full-page ad.
