Steward Health Care, which recently moved into Central Massachusetts with the planned takeover of a physicians network, has roughly doubled its overall size by buying eight hospitals outside the region.
The Boston hospital network bought three hospitals each in Ohio and Florida and two in Pennsylvania, it announced Thursday. The deal, if approved by regulators, is expected to close in the second half of the year.
Steward said in November it plans to acquire the Central Massachusetts Independent Physicians Association, or CMIPA, with about 200 members.
Steward's Massachusetts hospitals are largely in the eastern part of the state: Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Norwood Hospital in Norwood, St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, Carney Hospital in Dorcester, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Saint Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill and Methuen, Morton Hospital in Taunton and New England Sanai Hospital in Stoughton.
The company is owned by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management and Medical Properties Trust. It announced last September it received $1.25 billion from an Alabama-based real estate investment trust to fund a national expansion plan.
