Sterling National Country Club: A family place

Sterling National Country Club opened this year with a new owner and a special emphasis on families.

Forewinds Hospitality LLC bought the privately-owned golf course and country club late last year. Now, management is targeting young families with a focus on great golf and great hospitality.

"Our goal is for our members to feel like Sterling National is their second home," says Elliott Chick, general manager. "So we go out of our way to make members’ experiences here memorable."

The general manager noted that staff members go above and beyond with extras like free towels in the golf carts and complimentary bottles of water for golfers.

Chick noted that the menu in the clubhouse dining room has been upgraded with input from the Forewinds’ executive chef Paul O’Toole, who made an appearance earlier this year at the club for his "Grillin & Chillin" cooking demonstration. "Unlike some other golf facilities, we welcome families in our dining room," Chick says. "Every Sunday we host a barbeque on the patio with activities for children."

The response to the country club’s new identity has been favorable. Since Forewinds took over, membership increased by five percent within the first six months.

The country club’s current programming for children includes golf camps for youth. Sterling National is also working on plans that will add a swimming pool to supplement the country club’s family-centered amenities.

Sterling National Country Club is located on 260 acres of nature preserve and wetlands. The golf course is an Audubon International Certified Cooperative Sanctuary, one of only five such golf courses in the state. Tee box areas are landscaped with wildflowers and native plantings.

The golf course was designed by Michael Hurdzan, an internationally recognized authority on golf course environmental issues. Hurdzan has designed some of the most famous golf courses in the U.S. and Canada.

Chick, who has managed golf courses throughout the country, describes Sterling National as "one of the premier facilities in the country." The course’s reputation as a championship-level facility was reinforced this summer when members of the Champions Tour played a nine-hole match there after being flooded out of their tournament.

Sterling National’s golf course has been ranked 11th in the state by Golf Week Magazine which cites its superb conditioning, challenging layout and convenient location. Five sets of tees make the course accessible for every level of golfer. Each hole boasts its own personal identity, and golfers will appreciate the fact that no hole intrudes on any other.

For businesses and other groups, Sterling National Country Club accommodates golf outings on Mondays and Tuesdays, typically with early morning and afternoon shotguns. "We are one of only a handful of facilities that provides a specially trained staff for golf events," Chick says. "We offer a variety of options for meals, including breakfast buffets, box lunches, clam bakes, lobster bakes, cookouts and sit-down dinners."

The country club is also available to the general public for corporate events, banquets, and special events, such as weddings, with outdoor and indoor options for the ceremony. The spacious dining room seats 225 and features a large dance floor and beautiful panoramic views of the grounds.

"Our goal is to establish Sterling National as the premier private golf, dining and recreation destination in Central Massachusetts," Chick says.
