Steady Growth For TJX

Third-quarter sales for Framingham-based off-price retailer TJX Cos. rose 5 percent to $5.8 billion while the company collected $406 million in profits compared with the same quarter in 2010.

Through the first nine months of the year, the company has earned $1.02 billion in profits on $16.48 billion in revenues, up from a $1.01 billion in profits on $15.61 billion in revenues last year.

Same-store sales in the third quarter were up about 3 percent despite unseasonably warm temperatures holding back the company's sales of fall apparel items.

Sales in Europe were off about 3 percent, while sales in the United States and Canada rose by single-digits.

The U.S. Commerce Department released national retail sales data for the month of October, which stood at $397.7 billion, up more than 7 percent from last year.
