The state's unemployment rate hit 8 percent in April, up from 7.7 percent the previous month, the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development said.
The office initially estimated the March rate at 7.8 percent. The national unemployment rate hit 8.9 percent in April after climbing to 8.5 percent in March.
A year ago, the state's April unemployment rate was 4.8 percent and the national rate was 5 percent.
In all, 12,100 jobs were lost in Massachusetts in April. Nearly 20,000 jobs were lost in March. The information sector added jobs during April and the government sector remained flat compared to the previous month thanks to gains in federal government employment. All other sectors recorded month-to-month job losses.
At the end of April, there were 3,183,000 jobs in Massachusetts, down 116,100, or 3.5 percent, from a year ago and down 93,900 over the last six months.
