State Unemployment Rate Nearly 6%

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts hit 5.9 percent in November, the highest it's been since August 2003, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

In October, the unemployment rate increased to 5.5 percent from 5.3 percent. In November 2007, the state's unemployment rate was 4.3 percent.

The state also lost 8,000 jobs in November, the same number it lost in October. Since August, the state has lost 19,100 jobs.

The only two sectors to add jobs in November were government and information, which added 600 and 200 jobs, respectively. Each of the state's remaining seven sectors saw job declines, the worst coming in construction, which lost 1,700 jobs.
