Coronavirus testing has been going on in Massachusetts for nearly six months now, but until now the state didn't have campuses full of students to worry about including.
With the start of the full semester in mind — and with many colleges planning to house students on campus and hold at least some classes in-person — the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has converted its laboratory reporting system to Amazon Web Services in a move it says will increase the daily volume of processed test results to 100,000 from 25,000.
The transition, which took place Saturday, was planned for months as a way to accommodate an expected growth in test volumes and to improve the system's stability and security, Kevin Cranston, the Department of Public Health's assistant commissioner and director of the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences, said in a statement. The new cloud-based system includes a monitoring program for errors, replacing a process that's now done manually.
Through Tuesday, the Department of Public Health has reported processing more than 2.1 million tests during the pandemic.
Most Central Massachusetts colleges have said they are mandating testing at least for students upon arrival for the start of the semester, including Assumption University in Worcester, Clark University in Worcester, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Worcester State University.
