State Police and public safety officials this week announced plans for a new state crime lab in Marlborough that they say will keep Massachusetts at the leading edge of the behind-the-scenes police work that is increasingly key to major investigations.

Construction on the 200,000-square-foot facility, which is to be developed by Greatland Realty Partners and leased by the state, is expected to get underway early next year. The lab is expected to open for more than 250 employees in early 2028, the Healey administration said. The Marlborough site will consolidate existing facilities in Maynard and Sudbury under one roof. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026.

"Our crime lab professionals play a vital role in investigations across Massachusetts. We’re incredibly proud of their behind-the-scenes work and their deep commitment to delivering unbiased, science-based evidence to inform investigations and detect crime patterns," Col. Geoff Noble, superintendent of the State Police, said. "This new cutting-edge crime lab will enhance our ability to uphold national standards of forensic excellence, support law enforcement statewide, and provide justice for victims and families."

The Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory is a full-service laboratory system with nine current locations across the state. Scientists who work in the network respond to crime scenes, provide expert testimony, and perform laboratory testing on DNA, firearms, drugs, explosives, fingerprints, and more.

"Massachusetts is a national leader in forensic science. Beyond the critical infrastructure, this project represents our continued commitment to scientific excellence, justice and public safety innovation," Public Safety and Security Secretary Terrence Reidy said.

Preliminary 2024 crime data showed there were 231,442 crimes reported in Massachusetts last year, down 6.53% from 2023 when looking at all crimes and down 4.4% compared to 2023 when looking just at "part one" crimes like murder, rape, robbery, arson, larceny and burglary.

When the administration announced the plan, it said a long-term lease for the 100 Martinangelo Drive location "has been executed in accordance with Asset Management Board approval, which authorized a 20-year lease term with two, 10-year extension options."

That approach, state officials said, "is enabling the state police to obtain a much-needed facility several years faster than would be possible if the project had been delivered through traditional capital borrowing and public construction."
