Eight Central Massachusetts hospitals and community health centers are among 57 Bay State recipients of grants aimed at improving care for vulnerable populations and reducing health care costs, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
In total, $14.5 million was awarded to hospitals and health centers, which had to apply for the grants. The money was included in the fiscal 2013 state budget and is supported by federal matching funds, HHS said. It will be used for the following:
- Development of integrated health care delivery systems;
- Development of alternatives to fee-for-service payment systems;
- Improving outcomes and quality;
- Enhancing outreach and enrollment in health insurance programs; and
- Strategic planning
"This funding will help providers improve services so patients get the care they need, and ultimately, it will support our top priority of controlling health care costs,” Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement.
Grants issued to Central Massachusetts recipients include $500,000 to Athol Hospital; $76,000 to Community Health Connections of Fitchburg; $614,576 to Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center of Worcester; $99,490 to Family Health Center of Worcester; $295,822 to Heywood Hospital of Gardner; $243,100 to Milford Regional Medical Center; $308,344 for Nashoba Valley Medical Center of Ayer; and $2 million for Umass Memorial Medical Center of Worcester.
