Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito are pumping $2.3 million into community foundations in Central Massachusetts as a method of providing immediate COVID-19 relief, the state announced Wednesday.
The Greater Worcester Community Foundation will receive $896,152, the Foundation for MetroWest will receive $746,364, and the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts will receive $679,552.
The money is part of a $10-million statewide initiative to funnel resources to groups providing relief and support for households enduring severe economic hardship due to the pandemic, according to the state announcement. Each foundation receiving support will re-grant program funds to local and regional community-based organizations.
“As Massachusetts experiences a second COVID-19 surge, there are so many people suffering and in need of help,” said Senate President Karen Spilka (D-Ashland). “Our priorities in the Senate have been to provide immediate access to emergency food support, mental health support, rental and utility assistance, emergency childcare, educational support, and emergency financial support for individuals with COVID.”
