Massachusetts added 4,000 jobs in May, but it wasn’t enough to stave off an increase in the unemployment rate to 8.2 percent, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development said.
The state’s unemployment rate was 8 percent in April.
Many of the job gains recorded in May were in the business services, education and health services sector and the hospitality sector. Gains were also reported in the financial activities and trade sector and the transportation and utilities sector. Continued losses were reported in the manufacturing and information sectors.
Overall, jobs are down 111,100, or 3.4 percent, compared to a year ago.
