Framingham-based Staples unveiled a 685-kilowatt solar installation at its headquarters, the 37th solar array for the global office products giant, it announced.
The project was done with the help of SunEdison, a solar energy services provider and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. of St. Peters, Mo., Staples said.
The installation brings Staples’ use of solar power to nearly 14 megawatts across its U.S. operations, equivalent to powering nearly 1,800 average U.S. homes for a year. The system in Framingham consists of more than 2,440 solar modules and will generate an estimated 850,000 kilowatt hours of energy to help power the company’s 650,000-square-foot headquarters building in the 9/90 Corporate Center near the junction of Route 9 and the Massachusetts Turnpike.
“This solar power system at our global headquarters is a demonstration of Staples’ dedication to sustainability across our business,” said Mark Buckley, vice president of environmental affairs. “Our partnership for solar energy with SunEdison provides cost-effective power and helps Staples meet its environmental goals.”
