Staples to fight FTC merger challenge

Framingham office supply supplier Staples has announced it will fight the Federal Trade Commission’s challenge to its planned merger with Office Depot.

The trade commission announced Monday it would move to block the company’s planned merger with its rival, saying that the merger would reduce competition within the market and lead to higher prices.

Staples maintains that the acquisition would benefit customers as well as employees and shareholders, the company said in a release Monday. The office products landscape is also incredibly competitive, according to the company.

The company announced Monday it intends to show the trade commission that it has underestimated the competitive field the joint company would face.
