Staples Settles Class Action Suit

Framingham-based Staples Inc. announced it has settled several class action lawsuits concerning overtime pay for middle managers for $42 million.

The cases date as far back as 2002 and involve more than 5,500 current and former employees. They allege misclassification of assistant store managers.

Settlement terms involve no admission of wrongdoing by the company and in a press release, the company stands by its treatment of associates.

The settlement must still be approved by the court, but it resolves the litigation. The company also agreed to stop pursuing an appeal to a verdict in a New Jersey court last year, and agrees to pay attorney fees for the class’s counsel. Those costs are not included in the $42 million but were not disclosed.
