As its executive team faces shareholder challenges, Framingham-based retailer Staples today announced the opening of a development center in downtown Seattle.
The center will be made up of e-commerce and engineering teams responsible for enhancing online use in areas such as search, search engine optimization and personalization, the company said.
"Seattle has a wealth of talented engineers and leaders who are perfect matches for the opportunities at Staples, primarily around using big data to develop a personalized shopping experience, and developing innovative global services," said Faisal Masud, executive vice president, global e-commerce. "At the development center, we're building core components to power innovative e-commerce."
Just last month, Staples was downgraded by Chicago-based Fitch Ratings due in part to competition from online retailers, persistent weakness in the company's international segment and the challenging macroeconomic environment.
The development center, Staples’ second office on the west coast, is part of its initiative to boost software development, product management, usability, analytics and online merchandising positions as it continues to invest in ways to let customers shop in stores, on desktop computers or on mobile devices, the company said.
