Staples expands new program

Staples is expanding its program that allows home and business owners to control energy use from handheld devices, according to announcement today from the Framingham-based office supply retailer and the company it has partnered with in the venture.

Staples and Zonoff, of Malvern, Pa., said the Staples Connect program, centered around an application that was unveiled in September, is adding new partners, support for additional wireless protocols, and the opening of a Manhattan in-store display.

Companies announcing support for the expansion include Kwikset, Netgear, Radio Thermostat, Centralite, Withings, Waxman, Goji, Koubachi, and Rachio. They join several partners who already sell products in Staples stores or online at Staples.com. Those partners include such recognizable names as Lutron, Philips, Linksys, Honeywell, First Alert and D-Link.

The Staples Connect platform is also planning to expand support for ZigBee, Bluetooth and Insteon based products, which will join Z-Wave, Lutron ClearConnect and Wi-Fi as supported radios and protocols.

"We envision a home in which open standards like WiFi, Z-Wave, ZigBee, Bluetooth and others work seamlessly alongside traditionally proprietary standards like Lutron's Clear Connect," said Zonoff CEO Mike Harris.
