Staples cuts ‘hundreds’

Framingham office supply company Staples is laying of hundreds of corporate employees, according to multiple reports citing sources within the company.

The news was first broken by Forbes, in what one source described as a “bloodbath” of layoffs of those in both senior and junior positions. The reports were substantiated by the Boston Globe shortly after, with reporters speaking to analysts who explained this move indicates the company is preparing for its planned merger with Office Depot to not go through.

Staples has not made any statements about the layoffs, only stating that it was “streamlining the organization” in a release detailing leadership changes at the company. Calls to Staples for comment were not returned by deadline.

The news comes as the retailer continues to fight for a merger with Office Max, using legal measures to challenge the Federal Trade Commission to allow the merger.
