St. Vincent Plans CitySquare Cancer Center

Saint Vincent Hospital of Worcester is planning a new $21-million cancer center at the downtown CitySquare development.

Timothy McGourthy, the city’s chief development officer, said the city has been in discussions with the hospital and CitySquare II Development Co., the project’s developer. He said the site offers the hospital good access to its main campus as well as an opportunity to be involved in the redevelopment of the downtown area.

“We’re thrilled that they’re moving forward and that’s the site,” McGourthy said. “It helps move the City Square project further down the line.”

The center, scheduled to open in early 2013, will be a two-story 40,000-square-foot building on Foster Street. Saint Vincent plans to move its existing radiation services to the new location, McGourthy said.

He said the city is open to the idea of tax relief for the new building, though he said that will need to be balanced with the need for funding for infrastructure improvements at CitySquare. He said officials will discuss the issue further with Saint Vincent and the developer before bringing a proposal to the City Council.

Saint Vincent is the second major tenant to sign on to the CitySquare project. The other is insurer Unun, which plans to move its Worcester headquarters to the new complex.
