St. Vincent CEO mans plow, wields shovel

It was all hands on deck Thursday for the staff at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester as a winter storm drops about a foot of snow on Central and Eastern Massachusetts.

Even CEO Jeffrey Welch bundled up to jump into the snow mess and help the hospital’s maintenance crew clear the snow from the walkways and parking lots to keep the building operational.

With a photo to prove it, Welch manned a small front end loader. He even helped shovel for a few hours, he said Thursday evening while still at the hospital.

“The team here did a great job clearing the way,” he said. “The hospital actually didn’t miss a beat.”

Welch said he drove to the hospital at 4 a.m. to beat the snow and was hopeful he’d be able to leave by 9 p.m. Thursday.

Most of the areas, however, were cleared with snow as of 5 p.m.

“People were working together, and it was a team effort,” he said.
