Spectrum Health Systems, a Worcester addiction treatment nonprofit, is marking its 50th anniversary by setting a goal for itself: treating 500,000 patients by 2025.

Spectrum has already been expanding in recent years, including opening the New England Recovery Center in 2015, a 104-bed inpatient treatment program in Westborough. Recent years have also seen the opening of new facilities in Millbury and Weymouth and an expansion of a center in Pittsfield.

This month, Spectrum's president and CEO, Kurt Isaacson, laid out the agency's goal for the coming years of treating half a million additional clients beat drug and alcohol addiction. He cited opioid-related challenges today, which has killed around 2,000 annually in Massachusetts in the past few years.

Spectrum estimates it treats between 80,000 and 88,000 clients per year.

Spectrum's footprint includes four Worcester locations and others in Central Massachusetts including Framingham, Leominster, Marlborough, Milford and Southbridge. It also has a presence in correctional facilities in Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia.

Spectrum began as the Challenge House in Methuen, eventually adding inpatient detoxification, outpatient counseling and methadone treatment. It launched its educational arm in 2018 to provide customized training and technical assistance services for other addiction agencies.
