Substance abuse and mental health treatment provider Spectrum Health Systems Inc. is continuing to expand both nationally and inside Massachusetts.
The Worcester-based nonprofit has opened an outpatient clinic in Pittsfield, offering medication-assisted treatment and counseling, it announced.
"We are pleased to offer our services to address the growing need for treatment in Pittsfield and its surrounding communities," said Kristin Nolan, Spectrum's director of outpatient services. "Local residents will no longer have to travel round trip as far away as Springfield and Holyoke on a daily basis to get treatment. That travel time is certainly a hindrance to an individual trying to integrate back into being a productive member of the community."
The outpatient counseling program serves adults with chronic substance abuse or mental health issues using a holistic approach and targeting risk factors associated with addictions and mental illness.
Spectrum said it was also recently selected by the Florida Department of Corrections to operate substance abuse programs at three correctional facilities in the Sunshine State. The contract includes 408 residential treatment beds and the program is designed to assist male inmates with serious substance abuse issues.
"Despite … shrinking public dollars, Spectrum's correctional services continue to grow as states look for evidence-based, value-added strategies to reduce the taxpayer burden of reincarceration," said Christopher Petrozzi, Spectrum's executive vice president of correctional services.
Spectrum's Correctional Treatment Division serves more than 6,500 criminal offenders nationwide and includes 31 in-prison programs. The organization has more than 125 programs and institutions in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Georgia, Tennessee, Iowa, Maine, Florida and Washington, serving more than 40,000 people.
