Special Olympics Center In Marlborough Nears Completion

The new 25,000-square-foot Yawkey Sports Training Center being built at 512 Forest St. in Marlborough by Special Olympics Massachusetts is expected to be completed by mid-October.

The facility, which cost an estimated $10.8 million, will be used to train the coaches that work with the organization's special needs athletes.

The Yawkey Sports Training Center, built by Columbia Construction Co. of Wilmington and designed by DiGiorgio Associates of Boston, will include high-tech training rooms for coaches, volunteer, athletes and medical professionals, a full court gymnasium and athletic fields, a hall of fame showcase, meeting rooms, staff offices, special event space and more.

Money Matters

Special Olympics Massachusetts has raised $6.1 million of the total price tag since it started fundraising in August 2008.

Bob Johnson, president and CEO of Special Olympics Massachusetts, said that the economy has posed a fundraising challenge, but that the sports center provides a "unique opportunity for individuals to memorialize themselves and others" through donations.

"Fundraising is slower since the economic downturn but there is still a great deal of interest, and we continue to seek out individuals that this would be a great opportunity for," Johnson said.

The new training center gets its named from the Yawkey Foundation, which was established by the late owners of the Boston Red Sox, Tom and Jean Yawkey. The foundation donated $2.5 million to the project.

Johnson emphasized that Yawkey Sports Training Center will not be a competition site. Special Olympics want its athletes to compete in public facilities such as schools and recreation departments, because it helps raise awareness, he said.
