Southbridge Municipal Airport is receiving a $217,000 federal grant to improve its runway and conduct studies, including a wildlife hazard assessment.
The federal grant, announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation on Tuesday, is part of more than $9.7 million given to 11 Massachusetts airports. Nationwide, more than $1.2 billion was given to 405 airports.
The announcement didn’t detail what runway improvements were needed in Southbridge or what studies would be conducted besides an assessment of the facility’s potential wildlife hazards.
The city-run airport, which includes the Red Baron Diner, is located at 220 Airport Access Road near the line with Charlton and Sturbridge.
