Southbridge landfill fined $85K

A Southbridge recycling and disposal park will pay more than $85,000 in state penalties after several environmental violations were found after six recent inspections.

The Southbridge Recycling and Disposal Park (SDRP) has agreed to the fine and has said it will comply with the regulations it was found to have violated, the state Department of Environmental Protection said Wednesday.

MassDEP assessed the fine after inspections in June, July, August and October found violations of the solid waste management regulations, including off-site odors, incomplete containment berms, incomplete cover of solid waste, failure to maintain adequate erosion controls, failure to notify the state of problems with the landfill’s gas collection system, failure to prevent contact stormwater from discharging to groundwater and failure to follow through with the air operating permit process.

In a statement, MassDEP’s Worcester office director Mary Jude Pigsley said operations at the landfill have caused odors in surrounding neighborhoods.

SDRP will pay for a qualified third-party consulting engineer to be at the landfill for the last two hours of operation on all days when waste-related activities occur. That engineer will report findings to the company, Southbridge and MassDEP.
