Southbridge firm to pay $400K over unnecessary urine tests

A settlement with the state Attorney General Maura Healey’s office will see a Southbridge clinical laboratory pay more than $400,000 to resolve claims it billed MassHealth for unnecessary drug screens.
Southbridge-based Precision Testing Laboratories, Inc. and owner David Fromm of Hull agreed to the settlement, the AG’s office announced Friday.
Fromm and his company are barred from participating in MassHealth for 10 years, and neither are doing business as a healthcare provider in the state.
The investigation, initiated after MassHealth referred the case to Healey’s office, found that the company billed MassHealth for expensive, quantitative urine drug tests as a supplement to less expensive qualitative urine drug screens.
According to the AG”s office, the investigation found the company aggressively marketed an expensive and complex drug testing package to sober houses, despite knowing the tests were for residential sobriety monitoring, a violation of MassHealth regulations.
The Connecticut Attorney General’s office has reached a similar settlement with Fromm and the company, Healey’s office said.
