Block MEMS, LLC received a $2.2 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop and supply advanced spectrometers for the Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with NSWC IHD to supply this next generation spectrometer for threat detection,” Dan Cavicchio, Block's chairman and CEO, said in a press release on Wednesday. “This rugged portable instrument will be much more sensitive and provide improved resolution compared to the state-of-the-art."
The Southborough company completed a contract with the U.S. Navy’s Standoff Illuminator for Measuring Absorbance and Reflectance Infrared Light Signatures (SILMARILS) program, which was funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity. The instrument incorporates the most advanced infrared detectors and lasers to help NSWC IHD accomplish its mission.
Block makes quantum cascade laser-based products and has more than 15 years of experience developing and manufacturing mid-infrared QCL systems. The company’s technology is used in transportation security, defense, critical infrastructure protection, medical device, and healthcare industries.
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division in Charles County, Maryland, works on energetics for the Navy, including explosives, propellants, pyrotechnics, reactive materials, and their application in propulsion systems and ordnance.
