Southborough Battery Maker To Power U.S. Army

Protonex Technology Corp., a Southborough battery maker, has received a $1.85 million defense contract to develop new fuel cell equipment for the U.S. Army.

The company makes a portable and rechargeable lightweight 250-watt battery that saves money compared to using non-rechargeable batteries.

With the contract, Protonex will develop a next generation version of the M250-X battery that will be smaller in size and weight and will be more rugged for field use by the Army.

The five-month contract opens the company to possible additional future contracts totaling $6.4 million for delivery of more than 100 units.
